Goals

I've set myself a couple of goals for this year. The first is to spend 15 minutes (on each day I'm in the sewing room) cutting and sorting all the fabrics which are hidden in two large plastic storage boxes in the corner of the room. This is a place where in the past I've tossed pieces of leftover backing fabrics, pieces I wasn't sure what to do with, and also orphan blocks.

I've made a start in the last two days and ended up spending 30 minutes each day, and it has made quite a dent already. I'll be really happy if I can get one container out of the room, and entirely thrilled if I can get them both empty.

This morning I tackled something else - I cleaned off the cutting table. I purchased the two containers on the table the other day at a discount store, and the one on the left holds all my supplies like tape measures, pin containers etc, and the one on the right holds fabric trimmings. My goal is to keep my cutting table clear at all times during the year. I predict this will be the tougher of my goals.

I haven't done my 15 minutes of sorting from the fabric boxes yet, but that's next on my list for today, and after that's done, I'm pretty sure I'll be able to assemble the last sections of the purple stars top. How fun to see it all come together!

Also - a big thank you to Prue for a lovely day out yesterday. My kids and I met up with Prue and some other quilting ladies at her home in the hills. Amy and Camo were fascinated with her pet turtle, and then had the most fun feeding her cows. I didn't have my camera with me, but others did, and I'll share some pictures with you when I get copies.

I am also trying to spend 15 (or more) minutes a day cutting up scraps into useable strips and squares. Have done it for two days this week.
Boy, keeping the cutting area cleared off would be quite a challenge! That's where a lot of my scraps are piled that need to be cut up, but there's no room to work there. . .I have a smaller cutting mat on a TV table, and that's the one I really use.

I need a new habit.

Is having two rights a useful thing then? ;-) LOL

Those are super goals! By setting aside 15 minutes, your goal should be very achievable. I think most of us make our mistakes by trying to do too much at a time. By taking small steps, you'll get to the goal before you know it.

Linda is so right. I had a messy stash closet and decided to clear what I could while watching a fav decorating show on TV. I put up my normal (not sewing) ironing board to use as a temporary shelf, and did a little each day. It seemed overwhelming at first, but by small bites, it is done. My most challenging task is keeping my desk clear. Maybe the mess is there because my mind is easily distracted, but I've noticed how much more focused I am if I can keep that space tidier.

Thanks for this post - you are not alone in your struggles or efforts!

Tidying my cutting table is on my list for tomorrow!

Thanks for the 15 minutes a day cutting reminder, I was doing that last year and it made a huge difference. I'll need to start again.

Everytime I finish cutting a quilt I clear up the mess and promise myself that I'll keep it like that ALWAYS! Do I? Like hell I do!

If you could see it now, covered in purple and white nine patches, not to mention goodness only knows what!

xx

You are not alone. I do not even have room to cut a DJ block and I cleared off the table a couple of days ago.
