1928 Singer Treadle

New Years Day was entirely wonderful for many reasons. I got to do many of my favourite things, like piecing and quilting - so hopefully they'll feature prominently in this new year. Marty and I also headed to the other side of town to have a look at a sewing machine, and the dear sweet thing came home with us.

Here she is - a 1928 Singer Treadle. In really quite good shape for her age. I have wanted a 6 drawer treadle for such a long time, and we have waited and waited until we found a good one at a reasonable price.

My Puppa had purchased one for me as a child for a small sum - I'm thinking around $20.00 or so, and for what reason I don't know, it didn't come home with me right away. I remember the treadle as if it were yesterday, the drawers were filled with the notions, laces and cottons of it's previous owner. It was like a treasure trove to me. A short time later I learned that a man had offered to double my Puppa's money, and so he sold it. I was devastated. I've always wished for another like it, and now I have one :-)

This one also has drawers filled with cottons, odds and ends, and an amazing selection of feet and accessories. I have to say, I'm entirely thrilled. And Happy New Year to me! :-)

Oh Tazzie! How fabulous, your find! The drawer carvings look just like the carvings on the drawers that were made into the cabinet I sent you pictures of! Wouldn't the woman who loved her machine so well be delighted to know that she is "out of hock" and treasured again? Happy, happy New Year my friend.

Tazzie,
What a beautiful machine and it looks like it is in such good condition. I've included a link to a vintage Singer Yahoo group. You may already have this info but if not it is an amazing wealth of knowledge.
I am blessed to have my Grandma Grace's 1923 treadle, the only machine she ever owned, and the one she pieced quilts on. I am also lucky enough to have one of those quilts.

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/vintagesingers/?yguid=223763354

There is also another Yahoo group for old sewing machines that covers many different brands it is

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/wefixit/?yguid=223763354

If the links do not work for you email and I will try again. Or you could do a search and they should come up. You do have to become a member but it is not a big deal. I have my account set up to not send emails from either group, so my email is not overwhelmed.
Have a Blessed New Year!

What a gorgeous machine & cabinet - the detail they put into those was just amazing. Still - I'd rather sew on my Pfaff!!

What a beautiful machine. I have just recently purchased a 1906 Singer treadle machine at an auction. It needs a little work, but not much. But what was really shocking to me was that not only did it come with the box of feet and accessories, but also the manuals! May it bring you much joy when you use it!!! I'll think of you when I get mine back into working order.

What a lovely thing to bring home. Don't old Singer machines have the most amazing attachments. I'm lucky to have my grandmother's 1918 model. It still sews beautifully.

Hi Tazzie,
I love your treadle machine- I inherited one from my grandmother- I am not sure what year it is but it has four drawers and it it pretty intact. Found a lovely metal pin box in it and some attachments as well.
It is part of my sewing room and a treasured gift from my grandmother.
I am sure that yours will give you many hours of pleasure.
Wishing you a very happy and healthy 2010.
Warmest regards,
Anna

Lucky You! I learned to sew on a sewing machine just like that. My Mom borrowed one from a friend because she thought that my little sister and I would be less likely to sew our fingers if we powered the machine. She was half right, I never sewed my finger, but my sister did. She could never do anything slowly. The Dear Jane quilt in the background is very beautiful!!!!

How wonderful. I have a 4 drawer one but need to get a belt so I can use it. I'll bet you didn't pay $10.

That's a great find Tazzie. There was one if these in my childhood too, but don't remember if it was Grandma's or Nana's. Needless to say it's gone now. Have fun playing with it

Hi Tazzie, I also have a 66 which my grandmother taught me how to sew simple items. I recently refurbished it and I need some parts most importantly a bobbin slide plate.
Do you know of a person who may help me.

random question. do you know if you can use a different treadle base them your sewing machine? I have an old 1924 white sewing machine, but all the treadle bases i find are singer.
