Last night I finished another Caswell block - I don't mind confessing that I wasn't in love with this block while I was stitching on it, and I still don't think it's ever going to rank up there with my favourites!
Caswell Quilt - Block D5
In the original block the stems are embroidered in place, but I don't really like embroidery (read: I'm not very good at it) so I decided to use bias strips instead. The bias strips make the block look a little more clunky, but I'm definitely not going to change it now. It probably would have been better to have the combs on the birds heads in a different fabric too - sometimes it's just so hard to decide on which ones to use.
I'm so glad this block is done though, and I know it's going to look great with all the others. There are only eight to go now - happy days!!
Lastly, a big thank you to Lorraine, Ann Caldicott, Sue, Janet, Mary Ann, Gretchen Weaver, Andree and Sjoukje for the lovely comments on my last post. I would love to have replied to you all personally, but your email address is set to 'no reply'. Big hugs to all of you! Chatter soon xox

Oh my goodness, this block is lovely. I adore the colours. The way you have changed it to not have any embroidery is great.
It really is lovely.
Your block with the wider stems does not look clunky to me. I don't mind doing embroidery but not my favorite thing to do. Your birds are wonderful. About 25 years ago, I took a class in dying fabrics and was shown a technique for making a piece similar to the blue you used in the one bird's tail.
Oh that is so funny as I think this is one of my favorites. You must be a flower girl! I do love your birds and I totally agree about the embroidery vs applique. the stems look great. Only 8 more to go - woohoo!
By the way, one of the reasons I don't like putting embroidery in my quilts anymore is that I had a very bad experience with a very expensive embroidery floss that I used for stems and tendrils on quilt and one very humid day I noticed that the green was "bleeding" onto the background - argh! So I will stick to applique whenever I can!
