Green Nine Patches - Setting?

These nine patches have been on my mind lately. I've been puzzling for a little while about what fabric I'd like to use as setting squares.

I'd really like to get busy sewing them into a top, but can't set my mind to a particular fabric.

I saw this brown print in my stash and wondered if it might be 'the one'. What do you all think - I'm still just not sure - I'm thinking perhaps a little too dark. Perhaps I should use the paisley I used in the setting triangles here?

  2. I like the character it gives
    the 9-patches.
It puts it in the same feel as the scrappy square one you did...the one you had to change the blue out.
No matter, you have great taste!

I think it's too dark. It doesn't allow the greens to sparkle so much. I love pink and green together, so I'm actually no help at all LOL.

  4. I think it's too attention-grabbing. It's stealing the show from your wonderful 9patches! Also, if you used a lighter color, you could emphasize the chain effect of the 9 patches...

  5. You have such excellent color sense - I'll bet if you continued, it would turn out gorgeous.

If it was mine, I would maybe use it as an outer border, with a light inner border, and something less dramatic as the plain squares. Now, just prove me wrong! I'll bet whatever you do will be stunning! 8-))

  6. I love the nine patches but the greens seem to be fighting that dark paisley. The lighter one is sure pretty! I like Elaine's idea too...

  7. Love your fabrics, but perhaps not together unless you want it to read pretty much dark values. Personally I would use a persimmon, salmons, redoranges or a spice colored fabric to spruce it up a bit.
    Something like this: http://www.greenhousefabrics.com/persimmon-2.aspx?ColorID=c57a9053-8d70-45b3-adab-00eaff69868e
    or even these:

The fabric you have shown could be an outer border:)

  8. I too think the greens are lost in the brown. I love the nine patches, so bright and pretty, please put them with something paler.

  10. I wonder if the brown doesn't compete with the green too much. Not enough contrast? Someone suggested pink, and I think a dusky pink would look fabulous as well. Also, someone else suggested a cream, which I think would in fact emphasise the chain. I have made 4 or 5 irish chains and this is what I have done every time to get that effect. Anyway, have fun! That's the most important thing :-)

  11. I like cream, or light dusky pink...

  12. I like the brown; the brighter parts of the nine patches seem to "spark" against both the dark greens and the paisley. I think the other paisley you are thinking about might be too light.

    I love paisley fabrics.

  13. I believe you need contrast also. I was wondering how a cheddar would look, but dusty pinks would pop too. The dark blends in too much, the light would blah it down. Try a bunch of different fabrics under a layout and see which one you like. Ooo...what about some purples with ooomph?

  14. I've gotta say that I really LIKE the dark paisley! I think that it is beautiful the way it is.

  15. I think you need more contrast for the setting blocks. That lighter fabric you linked to looks like a good possibility. Don't you just love 9 patches? So many possibilities.

  16. I would want more contrast also...but I bet my husband would love this. So whatever you do, someone is going to love it. Others will like it, but would have liked it better if.....

  17. Nope not the brown. I like the paisley you linked to.
