With all the tragedy of the Victorian bushfires on the news here, it has been really hard to concentrate on anything in the sewing room. Sewing just seems so unimportant. But yesterday I really needed a diversion, and it had to be something mindless.A while back I started making up a Bricks and Stepping Stones quilt from our dear Bonnie's website. I'd made up all the individual matchstick units and put them aside for a rainy day.
Yesterday I decided I'd start pairing up the units and even sewed a couple of rows together. I've laid some of my units out to show you, and the rest are all in the container in the background. There are so many scrappy fabrics in the makings of this quilt - some from favourite quilts, favourite friends, and some I can't even imagine how they came to be with me. I guess it's like a little trip down memory lane. Just what I needed really.
This is one of my favorite scrap designs. Simple and yet so elegant.

That is one of my favorite quilts of hers. It is easy and always looks so good!

ReplyDeleteI think everyone has the same reaction, it seems wrong for us to be acting as if nothing's happened, and yet there's nothing else to do. I simply cannot watch all the coverage, or I'd end up a cotcase. It's all just so awful.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking the same thing tonight as I was pulling out strips and strings for my log cabin blocks - it's nice to see a strip and think about the quilt it was leftover from. Mindless sewing is what I've been doing the last couple days too. I've been sorry to read about the bush fires too. It seems like there is so much tragedy and hardship these days.
ReplyDeleteThis is for sure the best way for me to keep myself grounded and with some sense of peace. I like to think it makes the prayers stronger. If I'm better, surely my prayers have a little more lift to 'em.
ReplyDeleteMy heart breaks watching the news too, and my prayers also go up for the people who are so deeply affected by these losses. I understand what you mean by keeping your hands busy. Thanks for posting your progress on this quilt, and your thoughts.
ReplyDeleteHi Tara I'm so glad that you and yours are safe and so sad that others are in such pain. It actually hurts to watch the news. I too would be doing mindless sewing at this point! I quilted my way through a pretty serious depression at one time in my life. It really does soothe--and part of that soothing is having a tangible result I think! I'll be thinking of you all often.

ReplyDeleteI like the Travels Through Time fabric set in there. As Mary says, there just seems to be so much going so tragically wrong. And when they started to say that the Australian fires are arson, well, that just seems like the last straw.
